Which does your family room most resemble—mission control with blinking lights everywhere or a war-zone with cords, components, and controllers strewn across the floor? Or is it a combination of both? Hmm….common problem. Family rooms have become kids’ media central so I’m guessing you answered “both”.
Televisions, computers, sound systems, video game systems, and even arcade games are a big part of the family room. Of course, bigger and MORE is always better. Right? (Just ask the kids…and the guys!)
To keep electronics from taking over your family room requires a 2-part plan: 1) appropriate storage for equipment and 2) proper set up for use.
Appropriate Storage for Equipment
First rule – intercept clutter where it accumulates which in the family room will be near the TV. Storage should be under or around the television for all DVD’s, game cords, components, and controllers.

Organize, organize, organize. Take inventory, sort everything into groups, determine how much space you need, and then leave space for future purchases. Plan on large containers like drawers for storing bigger game pieces like guitars and dance pads. Make the playing area cozy with throw rugs, floor pillows, and a trunk for playing surface.
Proper Set Up for Use
TV’s aren’t as ugly as they used to be so integrate into a stylish design. Open space and simple settings are fabulous and with wall-mount as an option, more floor space is now free for interactive video games or just lounging.
Place cabinetry where you spend most of the time and note, diagonal installations allow bulk to be tucked into the corner plus sightlines are good anywhere in the room. This unit has drawers on the side, below and a hidden compartment under the stairs.
Take focus off the TV for a while by enclosing in a cabinet…..
Or behind a sliding door. That should put a stop to blinking lights for a while!
